The problem with MS Office and OpenOffice.org is that they have programs most of us will never use and features that most of us don’t need.
For example, I am using OpenOffice.org’s Writer program to write this article. When I click on Edit, I get options such as ?Compare Document,? ?Navigator,? and ?Exchange Database.? When would I ever want to ?Exchange Database,? for goodness sake?
So, when is someone going to offer unbundled software for the rest of us?
In other words, if you don’t need a presentation program, you wouldn’t be forced to buy or download one.

'Difficult' site or design challenge?

I WAS at a site in Wales last week that had been bought at auction with a partly-constructed house on it.
The previous owner had started work building the house on a plot which had incredible countryside views, but which was also very hilly.
The costs involved in building in such a location had been underestimated.
So, what’s the deal with “difficult sites” and how hard is it to work around problems? A sloping site will often mean extra landscaping and the possible need for retaining walls. Drainage might be more difficult and a pump may even be necessary to take away excess rainwater.
However, as was the case with our property in Wales, one of the advantages of a sloping site is that you can make the most of views and you can take a more adventurous approach towards the design. Self-build experts suggest that for every degree of slope, the costs will rise by about Pounds 1,500. So a 10 [degrees] slope may cost another Pounds 15,000.
Another feature, and cost, of sloping sites is the garden. Chances are you will also have to incorporate garden steps and very possibly retaining walls.
With land available for building in short supply in some areas, people have had to take on plots that are smaller than they might like – but if the site seems too small at first look, it might not be a write-off.
In city or urban areas there is a general acceptance that sites will be small.
But the higher values that new and exciting properties command, tend to cancel out the drawbacks. This does mean that designers have to think carefully and this, in turn, leads to some pretty innovative design.
One thing that does have to be considered with narrow sites is that it’s all the more difficult to provide the ‘kerb appeal’ that might attract future buyers.
Most plot sizes are quoted in acres, and a classic self-build plot of quarter-of-an-acre, for instance, is equivalent to around 20m x 50m.
However, many developers build on plots as small as one twelfth of an acre (equivalent to 11m x 30m)

Our faith needs to be our first big rock. It is God who saves us from eternal death, becomes our best friend during the lonely times of our lives, heals us when doctors give us no hope, and allows peace to rest over us when our lives become chaotic.
Our family must fall in line second, not our careers. There has never been a person on his or her deathbed that wished that he had spent more time working and building his career.
